BEEINGS

Premiere at Climate Art - Alternative Approaches

exhibition at Chappe in Tammisaari, Finland

15.4.2023-3.9.2023

Since 2017 Makela has investigated the destiny of the honey bee. She became a beekeeper for a few years in order to understand the life circumstances of this indispensable species. She travelled around Europe documenting bee history and cultures in Poland, Lithuania, Slovenia and Germany. The process resulted in a 4 -channel video installation History of an Impossible Destiny which premiered in 2019 at MAC - Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago, Chile.

In BEEINGS Makela turns her focus on the partners of bees. She presents an imaginary orchid observed from the perspective of a tiny flying creature. The orchid is a flower which has most moulded it´s form and behavior in order to attract and communicate with pollinators. The symbiotic relationship it maintains with other life forms is the essence of its being.

BEEINGS installation offers a space of remembering that our world is a tabula rasa, which presents itself in a unique way to each species in terms of sensory experiences such as colors and scales. There are millions of different worlds on the planet Earth.  The work is a continuation for Makela´s series of ecocentric expeditions, in which she researches and imagines how the world  appears to non-human beings.

BEEINGS consists of a 2-channel 3D animation installation and a 3D-sculpture, printed with transparent bioplastic.
